This pair, depicting an assortment of Flowers in urns, closely follows the work of one of the greatest exponents of this genre of picture, Simon Pietersz Verelst. A Dutchman, born in The Hague in 1644 into a family of painters he later travelled to England where he settled in London and made his name producing marvellous studies of flowers, as well as portraiture. Such was his strength in this field that he became known as ‘The God of Flowers’, (a title somewhat of his own creation), influencing a generation of British artists in the manner of delicately depicting petal and leaf.

Painted in the first half of the eighteenth century, this fine pair shows hallmarks of Verelst’s mature style and were clearly finished by a painter well versed in the master’s methods.
