Oval oil on panel; 11 ½ by 10 in; 29 x 25 cm; held in a period giltwood frame

Provenance: Private Collection, England

Major Clark was a retired army officer who resided at a manor in Topsham, Devon. He was father of Samuel, who married in 1795 Josepha Rosetta Juaniz y Echalaz, the daughter of a Mexican merchant who settled in Devon. Samuel moved to London and was involved in the export and import business with offices and a home in the east end towards the docks.

This small oval shows the influence of the painter Thomas Hickey who used this format fairly often and who painted in a similar style. Lucidly rendered in oil, the sitter displays much character and is elegantly attired in the fashions of the period.
